The Garden Crew at Scenic Nursery

Jim and Donna's back yard

We have a strange lot with a typical townhouse/ zero lot line back yard and a huge front yard, at least in comparison.

As usual I didn't get any before pictures but I do have some almost completed ones.

jims garden2.jpg

Note the raised planter with the plastic covering the retaining wall The Garden Crew built at the back. the retainer is to keep the soil from rotting out the fence and the plastic protects the retainer from staying wet and rotting. I was trying to get some structure in the yard with more usable hard surface for people. The block wall gives us more sitting area and the pavers gives the ahrd surface. Pavers also drain so light rains disappear. We also added a gravel drainage area with drainage to the street for those hard rains.

jims garden4.jpg

In addition we lined the wall with plastic to keep water from leaking out the front.

This spring after everything is a little established I will post more pictures with what we did for the plantings.

What We Do

Natural Pruning
Unlike other services that specialize in just lawn care, we know how to prune each plant to bring out it’s natural beauty. We create a more natural effect by selectively pruning branches. Natural pruning also allows the plants to flower at their peak, and is an easier way to maintain the plants, making your job easier once we’ve left.
Fertilizing
A good fertilizer can make all the difference between a struggling garden, and one that really shines. As part of our service, our garden experts will diagnose and identify any nutrient deficiencies in your garden.
Weed Control
Weeds are every home-owner’s enemy. Don’t live with them! An effective weed control regimen can reduce or eliminate most of your weed problems.
Flower Beds
Designing an eye-catching flower bed can be harder than it seems. Our consulant will design and the Garden Crew will install your annual and perennial flower beds for you.

Starry Night roses in December

Here is a picture I took a few days ago of Starry Night roses at the beginning of Scenic Drive at the fountain at LaLoma, Scenic and H St. For those of you from the north East, Eat your heart out.

starry night 3.jpg

Here it is in december and in full bloom. Not as heavy as I have seen it during the year but still impressive. I have posted about Starry Night before but again it has performed wonderfully well.

They were pruned in January and we fertilized them with our six month fertilizer at the same time. They started blooming in mid April and still have not quit. They have NEVER been sprayed for bugs or disease.

Starry night is large for some uses and I am looking for additional varieties that perform as well in our climate and as I get better info I will let you know.

A small back yard

Donna and I have been working on our yard and our first major project was to redo our small back yard. It is small, dominated by a giant sycamore and generally un usable. The Garden Crew has been working on putting in a paver patio shaped by a stacking block planter.

Note the sycamore trunk.

Note the wall in front of the fence to prevent the fence from rotting out. It is lined with plastic to give the wall a longer life also.

IMG_0057.jpg

you will also note a space between the wall and the pavers that will be filled with river rock to allow us to wash the patio off and keep it clean. as the wall gets finished and as it gets planted I will post additional pictures

Garden "B" Garden Crew Project

This is a job we finished recently in August 2006. It was designed and installed by the Garden Crew. The need was to turn a yard into something they family could use. There was a slope down toward the house with rain and irrigation flooding to the house and into a low spot in the garden.

What we did is build a small wall and regrade the soil level behind it to control the drainage problem. we placed a Quarry Stone Paver patio from Cal Stone in front of the wall all the way to the house. We also built a walk to the front drive and then added plantings for more drama, color and to create some shade on the patio.

In the front we wanted to create a more dramatic entry that was compatable with the house. There was a substantial slope to the front so we put in 2 steps with a circular landing before going into an existing courtyard with a nice waterfall pond.
we also included a walk way to the street. Before you had to use the drive to get to the house and with two cars on the drive it was way too crowded.
