I want to write a little about designing and choosing plants for your garden.
Plant choice is one of the most critical issues in keeping a easy to maintain garden. When you look at plants in our plant bins it is easy to over plant and use plants that are going to over grow. Pay attention to the sizes on our signs and give your plants enough room to grow. DO NOT assume that you can just prune and keep them under control.
Yes, you can but do you really want to do all that pruning?
What you are doing is buying more work for yourself and in many cases losing the reason you chose the plants in the first place.
Heavy pruning changes graceful plants into dense blobs. Heavy pruning also often stops flowering plants from blooming.
When we say a plant grows six feet tall by six feet wide you should give it a five to six to even seven foot spacing. Yes, this means you have fewer plants to choose from, but It also means you will have less work to do.
In my next post I will talk about layering your design. This technique gives your plants enough room to show, reduces pruning and allows for focal point plants.
Happy Planting
