2011Late Summer Color
Written by Jungle Jim
If your garden has spring beauty but summer boredom, we’ve got the cure. We always encourage customers to visit the nursery at least several times a season-especially outside of spring! Of course there’s nothing wrong with having spring beauty in the garden, but why limit it to one season?
Our green, gold and burgundy front entry display has excellent examples of summer shrub interest - purple leaf plum, orange-yellow ‘Kalidescope’ Abelia, ‘Swains Golden’ Cypress, dark and lime leaved Heuchera, dappled leaf Abutilon and Loropetalum. Although not traditional flower-power, texture and leaf color go a long way in sun or shade!
For those of you seeking out traditional summer flower color, lavender crape myrtle, blue Chaste Tree, dinner-plate Hibiscus and Rose of Sharon are in bloom now. Tucking in small splashes of annual color in the yard does wonders as well. Try pockets of Begonia, Nasturtiums, Pentas or Sunpatiens for part sunny areas. Impatiens and Coleus can make a statement for shady areas in almost any style garden, while Ageratum, compact Zinnia and Marigold work well in sunny spots.
There’s no reason your garden can’t be beautiful year-round. If you need help thinking outside the (flower) box, ask one of our sales professionals, or let our Garden Crew (523-2847) do the dirty work for you!
