Poisonous Plants

Written by Jungle Jim

We often are asked what plants we carry are kid or pet safe. This seemingly simple question is often quite complex. There are numerous sources online and in print that cover this topic. You would be amazed at how many common ornamental plants are actually quite toxic!

When researching the plants in your yard, keep in mind the validity of the source. Remember that there are many lists out there and just because a particular plant is not listed does not mean it is or isn’t safe! In case of an emergency, always call your Poison Control Center (Poison Control and Prevention Center Directory). If you have someone who has collapsed or has trouble breathing, always call 911.

Some of the resources we refer to include: The Sunset Western Garden Book lists toxic or irritant properties at the top of each applicable plant description. Cornell University (http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/index.html) has a very effective online database searched by both common and scientific name that lists toxic parts to humans and livestock. For pets, ASPCA also provides a database of toxic plants for dogs, cats, and horses.
