Shrub Planting Rules
Download this handout as PDF
- Rule 1: Water plants before planting. This is important to get good soil contact between the root ball, and the soil in your yard.
- Rule 2: Dig a hole that goes through any compacted soil. This is particularly important here in the valley, where a layer of hardpan exists, usually just a foot or so below the soil. Breaking through the hardpan allows excess water to drain away, so you won't frown your plants
- Rule 3: Plant at the correct depth! Plant so the top of the root ball is visible after planting. Mix MasterStart Pre=Plant Fertilizer and Master Nursery Gold Rush Soil Conditioner with the soil in your yard
- Rule 4: Build a 1-2” watering basin then water 2-3 times after planting.
- Rule 5: A 1-2” layer of mulch over the soil will keep the root ball cool.

Master Nursery Gold Rush & MasterStart is the key to a successful planting job.
