New Plant Care

Download this handout as PDF

  • Step 1: At planting, the plants will have been watered well. Check the rootball carefully daily the next few days to be sure it is MOIST (not wet). If you are unsure how to tell if it is moist or not, you may want to invest in a moisture meter. This can be an inexpensive guide to correct watering.

  • Step 2: As a rule of thumb apply at each watering:

#1 Size Plant1 Gallon of Water
    #5 Size5 Gallons
    #15 Size15 Gallons

For groundcovers and flowers you will need to keep the surrounding soil moist for the first 2 weeks and then start reducing watering frequency as they get established. Once established, flowers and groundcovers should need to be watered 2-3 times a week.

  • Step 3: During very hot weather you may need to check more often. Again, you need to check the rootball that was in the container, not the surrounding soil. Be sure to have a mulch of humus or pea bark on plants that are grown in the hot sun. This will help keep the roots moist and cool.
